NZ beach baches back in fashion

This ski season has seen a massive boom in people renting baches around New Zealand, reports the New Zealand Herald, and bookings for the summer have already increased by 25 per cent on last year.

A spokeswoman from Bachcare, Ms Leslie Preston, said more people in New Zealand are choosing to take advantage of the holiday opportunities within the country because of rising fuel costs.  Ms Preston also noticed a trend in higher-end baches being rented by families for longer periods of time.

In the 1950s, baches (or small holiday homes) became a trendy destination for middle-classed domestic travel in New Zealand, and emulated the simple New Zealand life.  Now, some baches have entered the higher-end holiday market and sport hot tubs, plasma screen televisions, modern technologies and luxury furniture.

Fortunately for budget-conscious international travellers, such as the thousands of UK nationals on a New Zealand working holiday visa who are working to financially support their travel around the country, there are still many baches that remain true to the iconic kiwi bach and offer the cheap, sought-after beachside lifestyle.
