Canadian Embassy in Chile moved temporarily due to damage

The Canadian Government has advised against non-essential travel to the Chilean regions of Valparaiso, Rancagua, Talca, Concepción and Santiago due to extensive damage to infrastructure, including the damage of the Canadian Embassy.

Canadian Embassy

The Canadian Embassy in Santiago has moved due to building damage.

The 27 February earthquake, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, struck close to the city of Concepción and has caused extensive damage and severely disrupted power and telecommunications. Santiago’s international airport is closed until further notice.

All Canadians in the affected areas are asked to call their family members in Canada, if they have not already done so, to let them know of their wellbeing.

Canadians requiring assistance should contact the Canadian Embassy, which has temporarily moved to Hotel Rugenda, Callao 3123 con Augusto Leguia, Santiago, Chile, phone (56) 2-652-3800. The Canadian Embassy is open from 8am to 8pm daily.

All communications in Chile, including the Canadian Embassy landline, are sporadic due to the infrastructure damage.

Canadians who cannot connect through to the embassy may place a collect call to the department’s Emergency Operations Centre at 613-996-8885.

The Canadian Embassy operations were moved to the Hotel Rugenda while inspections are carried out for structural defects in the embassy building.
