Australian tourism numbers up to a five year high
Even before Oprah Winfrey’s visit Australia was one of the top destinations for tourists, with overseas arrivals hitting a five-year high.
Nearly 13 million people visited Australia in the year July 2009 to June 2010, up 928,000 from the previous year.
Everyone who visits Australia, unless they have an Australian or New Zealand passport, must have an Australian Travel Visa. The most popular of these is the ETA Visa, which can be applied for online and is almost instantly approved.
Oprah Winfrey recently wrapped up filming in Australia for three episodes of the final series of her talk show. The television exposure is expected to significantly boost the number of overseas visitors to Australia next year.
While the number of overseas tourists rose, the number of permanent moves slowed with Australia immigration down by 7 per cent.
