PNG to get a work-holiday scheme with Australia

Australia and Papua New Guinea are discussing plans for a work-holiday visa scheme for university students wishing to visit Australia, reports ABC News.

The PNG Government have been working towards securing an agreement between the two countries that allows PNG university students to study and work in Australia.  The work-holiday visa would allow young PNG nationals to study in Australia for up to four months and work for up to six months.

The PNG Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Abal said his government is hoping the scheme will work to increase occupational networks for PNG graduates.

The scheme is due to be signed off in agreement in the next few weeks.  Last week, the government announced PNG would be included in the Pacific Islander guest workers scheme, which will see thousands of Pacific Islanders working in the farming industry in specific regions of Australia on temporary work permits.
