Dentists in demand Down Under
Australia is looking to New Zealand and beyond to plug holes in its dental system, reports the New Zealand Herald.
Reports out of Australia say that there are about 215,000 people on the public dental waiting list in New South Wales.
Care is so scarce in some areas of New South Wales that patients have been performing their own tooth extractions.
Australian Health Minister John Hatzistergos said a campaign was under way to hire 30 dentists from Britain, Ireland and New Zealand.
Already, dentists and dental specialists appear on Australia's Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) meaning applicants are given bonus points and applications fast-tracked.
Medical professionals including nurses, doctors, mid-wives, occupational therapists and psychiatrists are in high demand in Australia. A series of recruitment drives are underway in several key areas of the Australian economy to plug holes in the economy and fill skill shortages.
