Senator Chris Evans has warned that emigrating to Australia illegally will not be tolerated by his Government and the Australian PM has called for people smugglers to "rot in hell", despite there being concerns that Australia's migration policy is no longer taking a tough stance.

Amidst a recent flurry of boats found to be full of people emigrating to Australia illegally, Senator Evans has delivered a joint statement with Bob Debus, Home Affairs Minister, that a third people smuggler has been arrested, who will face severe punishment.

The maximum penalty for abetting people emigrating to Australia illegally is 20 years' imprisonment.

"People smuggling is a dangerous crime that exploits vulnerable people during times of desperation and demonstrates a callous disregard for the law," Senator Evans said.  "This has been reinforced by the tragic events of this week."

Last week, a boat full of people emigrating to Australia to seek asylum was struck by an explosion that killed three people and injured 31 others.

According to The Age, the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has been quoted as saying last week that people smugglers are "the vilest form of human life" in defence of claims that his Government has gone soft on people smuggling.

"They trade on the tragedy of others and that is why they should rot in jail, and in my own view, rot in hell."

Senator Evans also said in an interview with ABC that while emigrating to Australia is a top choice for people worldwide because of its "lifestyle and economy", the reality of increased asylum seeking in Australia is not the result of Australia becoming an easier target but that conditions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Sri Lanka have worsened.
