For younger people, Australia is the most popular destination. Another Bank of Scotland International survey showed that almost three fifths of people (59 per cent) who would most like to live in Australia were under the age of 45 with just 16 per cent over the age of 65 years.

Tony Wilcox, managing director at Bank of Scotland International, said: "It is the younger generation that continues to be attracted to moving abroad and Australia is clearly a popular destination."

Over one million Britons currently receive their pension abroad, according to the Department for Work and Pensions. The Institute for Public Policy Research predicts this figure will triple to more than 3.3 million British pensioners living abroad by 2050.
