Australia tops for mums: study reveals

Humanitarian organisation Save the Children has ranked 125 countries worldwide, placing Australia in its top 10 at number 7, as the best place for a mother and her child, based on issues of health and education.

Mothers in Australia have it better than their counterparts in the United States or United Kingdom, a new report shows.

Australia has ranked seventh, equal with the Netherlands, while Canada was ninth and the US and UK tied for 10th.

The other top-ranked countries were also Scandinavian countries, with Denmark and Finland tying for second.

Indicators of what made a good country for mothers included the lifetime risk of maternal mortality, the number of women using modern contraception and the and the number of births attended to by skilled personnel.

Yesterday, Australian Treasurer Paul Costello announced plans to increase the number of childcare places in Australia by 25,000 by 2009.
