Largest Australian embassy to be constructed in Jakarta
Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriarty has announced that a new embassy will be constructed in the Indonesian capital, and it will be the largest in the world.
Mr Moriarty said the new Australian embassy will be built over the current embassy building in the Patra Kuningan area of the city. The AU$230 million (£150 million), 40,500 sq metre project is expected to be completed by 2015.
"We are awaiting [an] invitation to cooperate in the future, including in building our new Australian embassy building, which will be our largest embassy anywhere in the world," said Mr Moriarty.
"We will continue to cooperate with the governor and his staff so that they can help continue this [embassy] construction project."
The ambassador was speaking after meeting with Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo and Mr Moriarty hailed the budding relationship between the two neighbouring countries.
Mr Moriarty said many Australian companies had offices located in the sprawling metropolitan area of Jakarta - which is home to 28 million people - and that Australia was committed to helping Indonesia develop infrastructure such as public transportation and water supplies.
