Western Australia immigration caused the state to record the fastest population growth rate out of the whole of Australia in 2008.

Western Australia immigration caused the state to record the fastest population growth rate out of the whole of Australia in 2008.

In 2008, Australia’s population increased by just over 400,000 to 21.6 million people. More than half of the new entrants, just over 230,000 people, arrived as a result of Australian immigration and the rest were babies born in Australia.

WA’s population growth of 3.9 per cent was the fastest pace in 40 years when Australia was settling skilled immigrants post war.

"The last time Australia experienced higher growth rates was in the 50s and 60s as a result of post war migration and high birth rates,'' the ABS said in a statement.

Now, 2.204 million people are calling the state home, 73,000 more than the year before. This growth included 40,614 migrants settling in WA, which was about 16 per cent of the national total.
