Congressman arrested in US immigration policy protest
While addressing the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy group in the United States, President Obama pledged to continue working to make the US immigration process fairer.
After three warnings from Park Police to move away from the White House gates, Gutierrez' group was then escorted to a police van, where they were handcuffed and taken presumably to the Park Police facility in southeast Washington for processing.
Other high profile protesters who were taken into custody include Gustavo Torres, the executive director of CASA de Maryland, and Deepak Bhargava, the executive director of the Center for Community Change. The incident, in which Gutierrez was charged with failure to obey a lawful order, led to a $100 fine for the congressman.
Speaking on the incident, Gutierrez was quoted as saying the following:
"We were there to say our immigration system is broken, it has a destructive corrosive effect on families. There are four million American citizen children, some of them were left without parents yesterday, and some of them will be left without parents still today. That's wrong. The president has the ability. Twenty-two U.S. senators have implored this president to say to a million DREAM eligible immigrant young men and women, don't deport them."
Gutierrez was the first Latino elected to Congress from the Midwest, and he has worked on a number of US Visa issues. Chief of these is the unsigned DREAM Act, an item of legislation that is intended to provide a pathway which would give a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children.
