Green Card Lottery for American visa weeks away
The Green Card Lottery for American immigrant hopefuls will be launched two weeks today, on the 2 October, and will run for two months.
The Green Card, or American permanent residency visa, allows a person to live and work in America without restrictions. 50,000 permanent residency visas are given to migrants every year through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, or the Green Card Lottery. Applicants are selected at random by a computer-generated system, and applications can be sent online.
Currently, Africa and Europe receive about 80 per cent of the visas in the lottery. All applicants drawn from the lottery must meet specific requirements in order to be granted the visa, including having the equivalent of a high school diploma or two years of work experience that requires training.
