Florida lawmakers show reservations about tough US immigration law
A bill similar to Arizona’s controversial immigration law has met with reservations by Florida’s business leaders.
An almost word-for-word copy of Arizona’s controversial immigration law was proposed in Florida last year by Attorney General Bill McCollum and Representative William Snyder. The draft bill would allow law enforcement officers to stop anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant, unless they could provide a valid Florida driver’s license, a valid Florida identification card or a valid tribal enrollment card, or a person could show proof of Canadian citizenship or a passport from a visa waiver program.
The Visa Waiver Program allows nationals from selected countries the ability to holiday in the US using the ESTA, or Electronic System for Travel Authorisation. The ESTA can be applied for online, and once approved it is electronically attached to a passport number.
The bill met a lot opposition especially in the business community.
Snyder has yet to submit the bill for the 2011 legislative session, but he has said that he was working on a revised proposal.
