Tourist or Business Visitor Visa: B1 or B2

The B1 and B2 Visas are the most common of the visas issued by American consular authorities for entry into America, and also remain the easiest of the visa classes to obtain.

The B1 Visa is used for specific types of business negotiations and meetings, while the B2 visa is for tourists or visitors for pleasure. In no circumstances, however, are B1 or B2 visa holders allowed to engage in employment or any commercial activity that will result in financial gain.

To be eligible for a B1 or B2 Visa you must:

• Hold a valid passport;
• Intend to return to your country of abode once the visa expires;
• Have the necessary financial capacity to support yourself while visiting America; and
• Be of good character.

B1 and B2 Visas are valid for an initial entry of up to 6 months, and this period may be extended for an additional 6 months if the visa holder can give good reason for needing the extension. An extension will only be granted for a B1 or B2 Visa if the visa holder can prove they are able to support themselves financially for the duration of the extension, and intend to leave America at the end of the authorised stay.
